Almost every child would rather watch TV, listen to music or be on the computer rather than read a book. Experts agree that high levels of literacy, beyond what school can teach are important to succeed in life. The foundation of that success is laid down in childhood. Unfortunately, more and more children are growing up without developing a love of reading. A love of reading takes its root at home, with a parent reading to the child and telling stories. But what happens if in today’s time starved generation cannot make it happen? Can we inculcate a love for literacy by using time honoured tools of storytelling and visual arts to draw students into the world of imagination and creativity – into the world of books?


As a parent and publisher, I feel that the basics of reading lie in storytelling. We read when we can’t bear not to know what will happen next. When a child’s imagination is engaged, reading a book is not about literacy anymore, it is all about wanting to know what happens next.
